Take Action: Federal Bill C-6

Advancement of C-6

Check the current status of Bill C-6 here!

Week of May 19th, 2021

The first debate at third reading occurred on April 16th, however since then there has been no movement on Bill C-6. It remains in the House at Third Reading.

ARPA Canada has shared concerns about the implications of Canadian Federal Bill C-6 – An Act to Amend the Criminal Code (Conversion Therapy), which is currently being debated in parliament.

A major flaw of conversion therapy bans is that they lump together body-affirming counselling with other out-dated, harmful forms of conversion therapy.

ARPA staff have been holding meetings with MPs from all parties, but we need your help to let MPs know of our concerns.

NEW ACTION ITEM: Printable, Mailable Postcard

We’ve created these printable postcard – three on a page – that you can send to your MP with a short message.

  1. You can cut it into three, and get two others in your household to do it too!
  2. On the back, write a brief message – one or two paragraphs is fine – urging them to vote against.
  3. Then you can drop this into a standard envelope, put the address of your MP on it and you can drop it in the mail without a stamp.

Why this message?

The message on the front says ‘a vote for Bill C-6 will send loving parents to jail.’ We chose this message because of the very real concerns that we are already experiencing. A BC father was in jail for refusing to support his daughter’s gender transition. A church in Saskatchewan is facing a human rights complaint for a sermon on sexuality, and a family in PEI might have a child removed from their home for encouraging her to consider the biblical perspective while she was actively experimenting with her sexual identity. Bill C-6 isn’t even yet law and already we’re seeing worrying trends.

Pastors express concern regarding Bill C-6:

We’ve asked several Canadian Pastors to share their concerns with Bill C-6 and the implications for their ministries.

What else can you do? Send and EasyMail!

Write your MP: Take fifteen minutes to write an EasyMail to your MP. Conversion therapy is not a topic that most MPs know a lot about, so your communication with them on this topic can be especially effective. This is just as important if your MP is a Liberal or New Democrat. Ask your MP to clarify that pastoral counselling, parental conversations, and professional help to address gender dysphoria are not forms of conversion therapy.

Don’t know what to say?

Well we have a one-page talking point document that you can use for reference. Make it one paragraph or fill multiple pages. It is up to you! Why handwritten notes? Well MPs get email quite a lot, and when they get a handwritten letter from a constituent like you it really gets their attention!
